Permanent Account Number or PAN Card is a nationalized identity card. Without a PAN, you will not be able to carry out any financial transaction. It is the Indian Income Tax Department that allocates this 10-digit alphanumeric and unique account number to a tax-paying person, company or HUF. It has lifetime validity. 

How to Apply for PAN Card?

PAN card application can be applied online or offline. Further, requests for changes or correction in PAN data may also be made online. The online process is the most hassle-free way of obtaining PAN. The applicant is only required to fill and submit the online application form along with online payment of the respective processing fee. Copies of required documents can then be sent by post to either NSDL or UTIITSL, for verification purposes.

Online PAN card application can be made on the NSDL website or UTIITSL website. Both have been authorized by the Government of India to issue the PAN or to make changes/corrections in the PAN on behalf of the Income Tax Department. 

How to apply for PAN Card Online via NSDL Website

Step 1: Select the PAN card application – ‘New PAN Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’ available on the NSDL website

Step 2: Fill in all the details in the form. Read the detailed instructions before filling the details on the PAN card application form. Click here to view the PAN card application instructions.

Step 3: Pay the required fees. The PAN card application fees varies on the option you choose for dispatch of your PAN card. Payment can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking. Upon successful payment, acknowledgment will be displayed through which you can check your application status. It will also be sent to your email ID. 

Step 4: Send the required documents through courier/post to the NSDL office, Pune. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL. Once the NSDL verifies the application and documents, it will issue the PAN card in 15 days.

How to Apply for a Reprint or Change Details on your PAN Card Online

You can apply for a reprint of your PAN card on both the Protean e-Gov Technologies Limited (NSDL) and the UTIITSL websites. The two situations wherein you can apply for a reprint of your PAN card are:

  • You already have a PAN number but the PAN Card is damaged.
  • You have lost your PAN Card.
  • You wish to make a few corrections or changes to the details on your existing PAN Card.

To apply for a reprint of your PAN, you will have to fill out the CSF form.

How to Apply for a Reprint or Correction of PAN Details on UTIITSL Website

Step 1: Visit https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/#

Step 2: Select if you want both a physical copy of your PAN  only.

Step 3: Click on ‘Reprint Pan Card’, after which a new page will open, there click on ‘Reprint Pan Card’.

Step 4: Fill in the required details.

Step 5: Enter the captcha and submit the form.

Step 6: Pay the fee.

Step 7: Print the acknowledgement receipt and mail it to your nearest UTIITSL center. Do remember to also include copies of the necessary documents (identity-proof, address-proof, and proof of date of birth documents). You must also enclose a copy of your Aadhaar card.

Step 8: You will also have to submit proof of an existing PAN card.

Charges Levied to Apply for a PAN Card Online

Apart from applying for a PAN Card, you can also make corrections, changes, or request for a PAN Card reprint online. You can apply for a PAN Card on the official website of UTITSL or Protean e-Gov Technologies Limited (formerly NSDL).

In case the communication address is in India, the charges levied for applying for a PAN Card is Rs.93 (exclusive of GST). In the case of a foreign communication address, the charges levied for applying for a PAN Card is Rs.864 (exclusive of GST). Once the payment has been made, you must submit the relevant documents. The PAN application will be processed only if the relevant documents have been processed.

Date of Birth Proof for Applying for a PAN Card Online

One of the below-mentioned documents may be submitted as proof of date of birth:

  • An affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth.
  • The marriage certificate that has been issued by a Registrar of Marriages.
  • Pension payment order.
  • Health Service Scheme photo card provided by the Central Government.
  • Ex-servicemen can provide the Contributory Health Scheme photo card.
  • Domicile certificate that has been issued by the Government.
  • Any photo identity card that has been issued by the State Government or Central Government.
  • Any photo identity card that has been issued by a State Public Sector Undertaking or Central Public Sector Undertaking.
  • Birth certificate that has been issued by a municipal authority.
  • Mark sheet or Matriculation certificate that has been provided by a recognized board.
  • Passport.
  • Driving License.
  • Elector’s photo identity card.
  • The Aadhaar Card that has been issued by the UIDAI.

How To Make Corrections/Updates In PAN?

If you want to make changes in the existing PAN such as change in name, date of birth etc, you can apply for it online. The procedure is almost the same as you apply for new PAN except in case of corrections in PAN, you also need to submit the documents to support the change required in PAN.

Here are the steps :

Step 1: Fill the online application form for making changes/corrections in PAN on the NSDL website

Step 2: Pay the application fees. The payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking. On successful payment, acknowledgement will be displayed. Save and print this acknowledgement number.

Step 3: Once the application and payment are accepted, the applicant is required to send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL. Documents sent should support the changes applied for in PAN. Example, request for the change in applicant’s or father’s name will have to be supported with a document that will contain proof of change of name from old to new.
